One flew over the cuckooââ¬â¢s nest Persuasive Essay Example For Students
One flew over the cuckooââ¬â¢s nest Persuasive Essay There are three major conflicts in the novel, One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, by Ken Kesey. Both internal and external in nature their causes, effects, and resolutions are explored in great detail. The cause of the conflict between Mac and Ratched begins immediately. As soon as McMurphy enters the ward he shows his individuality. Hes loud, brassy and the chief says, He sounds big. McMurphy publicly introduces himself and stands out from the rest of the men. He shows that he wont be controlled. Ratched wants and expects complete control. She refers to Mac as a, Manipulator, who will, use everyone and everything to his own end. Ironically Ratched is also a Manipulator. Miss Ratched chooses the orderlies to control them, she wants them to hate so they take their anger out on the patients. Ratcheds first win against McMurphy is when he challenges the ward policies on the music. He demands for the music to be shut off or at least turned down. Knowing that all the men are watching she completely humiliates Mac by telling him that she wont turn the music down further more she treats him like a child when she tells him to take his hands off her glass because he was staining them. dont be so selfish, says Miss Ratched when Mac asks for the music to be turned down. Ratcheds second major win against McMurphy on the ward is when she forces the men to ignore him and not to play cards with him. Using the threat of rationed cigarettes the patients are still much too afraid of Miss Ratched to go against her orders. McMurphy is completely left alone by the men and Ratched shows that she maintains control. Although McMurphy does not get the votes of the men because the fear they hve of Ratched McMurphy still comes out victorious when in the end the men eventually do vote to watch the world series. When the men do vote Ratched looses complete control over her ward and its the first time the men defy her as a group. And were sitting there head up in front of that blanked out television setand shes screaming behind us. McMurphy mocks and taunts Miss Ratched when he runs around with his towel on. He wasnt assigned a uniform and when Miss Ratched tells him to stop running around in the towel Mac stops and rips his towel off just to reveal that he has whale shorts on. McMurphy also writes obscene little notes under the toilettes where she looks with her mirror. The resolution of the conflict is near the end of the novel when McMurphy attacks Miss Ratched and knows that he would have to b lobotomized. The lobotomy is a loss for McMurphy and Miss Ratched finally finishes McMurphy off. McMurphy does win in a sense when Chief kills Mac so that he wouldnt be an example in front of the ward. Him dieing shows his freedom. The cause of McMurphys internal conflict is when he finally realizes that he is actually committed to the institution. The two sides of his conflict are, a Mac that wants to be himself no matter what but face the consequences and a Mac that will be a good patient and maybe get out of the institution earlier. Damned if you do and damned if you dont. Puts a man in one confounded bind, Id say. At first Mac decides to be a model patient and maybe get out of the ward. Strain of the situation begins to take its toll on Mac when Hardings wife visits the ward. He turns on both Harding and Martine when they seek his support, Quit bugging me, goddamit. Macs deck of cards explodes in his hands because he is so nervous. .u8a77c7cd8db8cfabb3553994bac85995 , .u8a77c7cd8db8cfabb3553994bac85995 .postImageUrl , .u8a77c7cd8db8cfabb3553994bac85995 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u8a77c7cd8db8cfabb3553994bac85995 , .u8a77c7cd8db8cfabb3553994bac85995:hover , .u8a77c7cd8db8cfabb3553994bac85995:visited , .u8a77c7cd8db8cfabb3553994bac85995:active { border:0!important; } .u8a77c7cd8db8cfabb3553994bac85995 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u8a77c7cd8db8cfabb3553994bac85995 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u8a77c7cd8db8cfabb3553994bac85995:active , .u8a77c7cd8db8cfabb3553994bac85995:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u8a77c7cd8db8cfabb3553994bac85995 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u8a77c7cd8db8cfabb3553994bac85995 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u8a77c7cd8db8cfabb3553994bac85995 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u8a77c7cd8db8cfabb3553994bac85995 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u8a77c7cd8db8cfabb3553994bac85995:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u8a77c7cd8db8cfabb3553994bac85995 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u8a77c7cd8db8cfabb3553994bac85995 .u8a77c7cd8db8cfabb3553994bac85995-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u8a77c7cd8db8cfabb3553994bac85995:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Adjectives and Adverbs for EssaysMacs internal conflict intensifies when he learns that he is one of the only few committed patients and hes in disbelief as to why the other patients stay voluntarily. I dont seem to be able to get it out of my head, says Mac referring to why the men stay. The return of the old McMurphy finally arrives when he realizes that he cant lead this sort of life and abandon his morals and character. Mac body language indicates hes back in the game, stretched and yawnedthumbs hooked in his pockets againswaggering. Another bold move by McMurphy to show that he was back was when he calmly walked over to the glass and smashed his hand through to get th e men their cigarettes McMurphy decides to be himself and if he looses he would loose on his own terms and not to Miss Ratched rules.. The resolution of Macs conflict is when he attacks Miss Ratched and knows that he has lost in a way but on his own terms. In another way he wins because he shows to the men that Miss Ratched was nothing but a women. The conflict that Chief has with himself is a very intense one. Unlike the other two this one is emphasized from the begin of the book and is only resolved at the very end of the novel. The cause of his internal conflict begins when he is a little boy on his Indian territory. The white man comes on his fathers land and insult the Indians right in front of Chief. The novel starts off with chief already deep in his own fog. He even says that he might eventually get lost in the fog forever. Chiefs first major loss is when McMurphy is humiliated in front of the ward, by Miss Ratched, about staining of the glass. When ever McMurphy looses to Ratched or seems to be down Chief goes into fog. When McMurphy cannot lift the control panel and looses his bet against the guys Chief is completely lost in his fog because after this Mac has lost three time in a row to Ratched or the combine. Chief sees the trouble Mac has to lift the control panel and finally gives up, the control panel, to chief, i s a symbol of the combine and the fact that Mac cant lift it destroys Chief. One of Chief major wins against the fog is when the men all come together to back up Mac for the world series and the comments that everyone makes to her. Chief say, I quit worrying about the BIG NURSE and the combine behind her. For the first time in his life he saw people clearly and not just the black outline around them. Another great win for Chief is when he enters the pool with all the other men. This is a big win because the Chief is so afraid of even the ground that to enter a pool is a great progress for him. Also Chief begins to see the ward as clean and silent and not humming of machinery. Chief even takes a big step when he stands up and looks out the window of the ward. The resolution to Chiefs conflict is after he kills Mac and escapes the institution at the end of the novel.

Internet Essays (353 words) - Internet Culture, Internet, New Media
Internet Information has long been sought out by many generations throughout time. It is a powerful tool that has often been hard to find, until the evolution of the Internet. The Internet has brought the world to the fingertips of millions world-wide. What used to take days or years to find, a person with the knowledge and ability may find in mere minutes of searching on the Internet. But along with the value it brings, there are also many dark sides. Pornography, stalkers, hackers, and other forms of evil are also prowling the Internet, many times on children. Millions of households are now connected to the information superhighway, with many of the parents "computer illiterate." These parents rely on their children's knowledge of computers and the Internet to show them the ropes. Often times the freedom that the children are given on the Internet is put to good use in educational activities, such as games, chatting, and tutorials on any subject that they may encounter in school. Parents often supervise their children while they are on-line, but there are some times that children are able to get connected, such as when the children have the computer in their room. Without the proper supervision, children can often times find vulgar material on the Internet. They might innocently click on a banner that is advertising on a web-site that looks safe, but often times these banners can be a link to a site with elicit material. The children were drawn in by the attractive banner to a site that is not meant to be viewed by them. This is also true for many of the chat rooms that they might wander into where pedophiles may be lurking, often lying about their age to get close to the children. Although there are many misleading and improper sites on the Internet, the overall value cannot be looked past. The information provided to children of today is far greater than what was offered just a few years ago. Children are now given an advantage that many adults did not have. I believe that children growing up in a home with and Internet connection have a definite advantage, as long as they are properly supervised and warned of the evils lurking in cyberspace.

How to Take Good News Interview Notes
How to Take Good News Interview Notes Even in an age of digital voice recorders, a reporterââ¬â¢s notebook and pen are still necessary tools for print and online journalists. Voice recorders are great for capturing every quote accurately, but transcribing interviews from them can often take too long, especially when youââ¬â¢re on a tight deadline. (Read more about voice recorders vs. notebooks here.) Still, many beginning reporters complain that with a notepad and pen they can never take down everything a source says in an interview, and they worry about writing fast enough in order to get quotes exactly right. So here are five tips for taking good notes. 1. Be Thorough ââ¬â But Not Stenographic You always want to take the most thorough notes possible. But remember, youââ¬â¢re not a stenographer. You donââ¬â¢t have to take down absolutely everything a source says. Keep in mind that youââ¬â¢re probably not going to use everything they say in your story. So donââ¬â¢t worry if you miss a few things here and there. 2. Jot Down the ââ¬ËGoodââ¬â¢ Quotes Watch an experienced reporter doing an interview, and youââ¬â¢ll probably notice that she isnââ¬â¢t constantly scribbling notes. Thatââ¬â¢s because seasoned reporters learn to listen for the ââ¬Å"good quotesâ⬠ââ¬â the ones theyââ¬â¢re likely to use - and not worry about the rest. The more interviews you do, the better youââ¬â¢ll get at writing down the best quotes, and at filtering out the rest. 3. Be Accurate - But Donââ¬â¢t Sweat Every Word You always want to be as accurate as possible when taking notes. But donââ¬â¢t worry if you miss a ââ¬Å"the,â⬠ââ¬Å"and,â⬠ââ¬Å"butâ⬠or ââ¬Å"alsoâ⬠here and there. No one expects you to get every quote exactly right, word-for-word, especially when youââ¬â¢re on a tight deadline, doing interviews at the scene of a breaking news event. It IS important to be accurate get the meaning of what someone says. So if they say, ââ¬Å"I hate the new law,â⬠you certainly donââ¬â¢t want to quote them as saying they love it. Also, when writing your story, donââ¬â¢t be afraid to paraphrase (put in your own words) something a source says if youââ¬â¢re not sure you got the quote exactly right. 4. Repeat That, Please If an interview subject talks fast or if you think you misheard something they said, donââ¬â¢t be afraid to ask them to repeat it. This can also be a good rule of thumb if a source says something especially provocative or controversial. ââ¬Å"Let me get this straight ââ¬â are you saying thatâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ is something reporters are often heard to say during interviews. Asking a source to repeat something is also a good idea if youre not sure you understand what theyve said, or if theyve said something in a really jargony, overly complicated way. For instance, if a police officer tells you a suspect made egress from the domicile and was apprehended following a foot chase, ask him to put that into plain English, which will probably be something to the effect of, the suspect ran out of the house. We ran after him and caught him. Thats a better quote for your story and one thats easier to take down in your notes. 5. Highlight the Good Stuff Once the interview is done, go back over your notes and use a checkmark to highlight the main points and quotes that youââ¬â¢re most likely to use. Do this right after the interview when your notes are still fresh.
